Here's a small case from today — the kind of question every factory and trading company gets, and the kind we usually answer with a guess.
A customer was planning a custom canvas bag and needed to know the size of their logo — how big it would actually appear on the bag. They had a photo of a similar bag with the logo on it, but no one had ever measured that logo. No drawing, no spec sheet, just a picture.
The old way would have been: look at the photo, squint a little, and reply "probably around 20 centimeters or so." That's how this usually goes.
The Trick: You Already Have a Ruler in the Picture
But here's the thing — we know our own bags. Every dimension of them. And that changes everything.
If you know one real length in a photo, you can calculate every other length in that photo. A photo is just pixels, but a known dimension acts as a reference: once you say "this edge here is 40 cm," the scale of the whole image is locked, and anything you measure can be converted to real-world units.
So I opened a little measuring tool I had built for myself a while back, loaded the customer's photo, and marked a known edge of the bag as the reference. Then I simply clicked two points across the logo.

The answer came out: 21 cm.
Then, the Honest Part
I told the customer the result — and then, because it's our job to know these things, I also told them the truth about precision:
"Around 20 is fine. On a bag this size, a difference of one or two centimeters is invisible to the eye."
The logo's width follows from its length, scaled proportionally — the customer's artwork keeps its aspect ratio, so one number pins down the other.
They agreed, and that was that. Question asked, question answered, no rulers shipped across the world, no guessing.

What it can do:
- Length — calibrate with any known object in the photo, then click two points to get the real distance between them;
- Angles — click a vertex and one point on each side;
- Area — outline any shape with three or more points, and it calculates the real-world area;
- Two independent references — you can calibrate both horizontally and vertically, which matters when the camera wasn't perfectly straight-on.
It runs entirely in your browser, works on a phone or a computer, and doesn't send your images anywhere.
One honest warning, the same one the tool itself displays: photos have lens distortion, and hand-clicked points have offset. For critical dimensions, take a few photos and average the results. For everything else — like deciding how big a logo should be on a tote bag — it's more than accurate enough.
