Where It Began: Why a 21-Year-Old Yiwu Garment Factory Is Walking the AI Road

2026-08-29 · Launch Article · The Factory's AI Road · Post 1

First, an introduction: we are a garment factory in Yiwu, Zhejiang, China — this is our 21st year. We make three main product lines: apparel (pajamas and loungewear, maternity wear, casual garments), bags (canvas totes, mommy bags, beach bags, storage pouches), and pet apparel. Our customers range from domestic e-commerce sellers and brands to overseas trade clients. From sample-making and custom production to OEM and private label, everything runs on our pattern room, our cutting tables, and a team of veteran tailors who have been with us for many years.

How It Actually Started

To be honest, our first steps with AI were nothing fancy. There was no strategy and no grand plan.

At first, it was just simple image work — generating pictures, swapping backgrounds, the kind of basic e-commerce product visuals that every online seller needs. Later we moved on to making short videos.

That was it. One small task after another, and step by step we got familiar with these tools. Looking back, that's probably the honest way most small factories get into AI: not through some transformation blueprint, but by quietly solving one small problem at a time.

Then, This Website

At the end of April, we used AI to build the very website you are reading right now.

Let that sink in for a moment. A sewing factory that has spent 21 years working with fabric, needles and thread — and now the same hands that run sample rooms and production lines have put together a website of our own. The online customization page, the product galleries, the bilingual text — AI helped us get all of it done, at a speed and cost that would have been unthinkable for us before.

The Surprise

Here is the part we honestly did not expect: we haven't promoted this site at all. No ads, no campaigns, not a single marketing dollar spent.

And yet, little by little, a few customers have already found us and started sending inquiries.

For a factory that spent over twenty years relying on trade fairs, old clients and word of mouth, that felt like a small but real signal. If a website that was never promoted can quietly bring customers to our door, it's worth paying attention to what happens when we actually put some effort in.

Why We're Writing This Journal

That's what this blog — "The Factory's AI Road" — is for. Before starting it, we talked it over internally and settled on three ground rules:

What We'll Write About Next

One Last Thing

Twenty-one years ago this factory started with sewing machines and craft. We believe AI won't make that craft worth any less — it will simply make the people who learn to use it move faster. We're just at the beginning of this road, and we'll update this journal whenever there's something real to report. It may come fast, it may come slow, but every post will be a true story.

If you're in the same trade, a customer, or simply curious about what happens when a traditional factory meets AI — welcome along. Contact details are at the bottom of the page. See you in Yiwu.
